While usually Monday is the nation-wide-dreaded-day, I welcomed it with open arms! Being in California, in the desert, with some of my favorite people was the perfect way to wake up. I started my day with a trip to Trader Joe's where I instantly picked up some additional blooms that matched the shoot's color palette perfectly. I carried on through the store picking out the prettiest of fruits and vegetables as we knew that was an important element we wanted to add to the tablescape (and it paid offffff!).
After I got back I had to get to work designing the floral compotes and the bouquet (insert a nervous squeel here). You see, I hadn't ever done a bouquet (for real) and I hadn't ever designed a compote start to finish--I've followed Ash's recipes and instructions while watching her do the same design right next to me, but I never did this 100% on my own, nor did I have to be the sole decision-maker, deciding if it looked pretty enough. But I got to work, constructing the bouquet first, using some of my favorite blooms for that, then I moved on to the compotes--three large and two small.
Sam and I drove together and got to the venue first--she was scouting and I going to set up--but as we pulled up and got out of the car, I literally was unable to contain my excitement. I had been eyeing this venue for many MANY months, and to actually be at it, shooting at it, styling at it...goodness, it was a small dream come true. That might sound a little dramatic, but there are a couple of things to note:
1 // I am a designer at heart. So pretty things set me over the edge. Naturally, this place would push me to the edge, filled to the brim with joy.
2 // I am a dog with a bone. So once my heart is set on something, it's really hard to talk me off the ledge. The girls will tell you--it's my greatest weakness and my biggest asset.
So when I saw this was a small dream come true, I mean it.
The team that brought this shoot together could not have been better. We had Sam behind the camera, Alicia with a make up brush in hand, a motherfucking Rue de Seine gown, paper, copper, and LEATHER goods from Natalie, and stunning VELVET ribbon from Jaime.
To say this shoot was a designers dream is an understatement. I can say wholeheartedly that this was my favorite shoot we've ever planned, designed, and styled.
Take a look at a few of our favorites from the day.
